“However it was New Jersey’s Dilan Druz along with Kauai’s Travis Smith who led the entire field all the way to the finals. In the Finals of the Open Am it was Travis Smith (Kauai HI)…[who] put on a show from heat start to finish.

The 13-18 divisions was just as competitive if not more so then the Open Amateur division and once again it was Travis Smith who took out Dilan Druz the current US Amateur Champion in the final by a small margin.”

Ultimately it was Travis Smith from Kauai, Hawaii who was crowned the 2008 NYBB Open Amateur Champion.

Luke Evslin couldn't afford a trip to Maui over the weekend, so he stayed on O'ahu and won a state championship instead.
Evslin was the surprise winner of the one-person canoe division of the Kanaka Ikaika State Championships yesterday.
He completed the 23-mile course from Makai Pier to Sand Island in 3 hours, 13 minutes, 34 seconds.

Kelly Foster, Evslin's roommate and teammate for the Hui Lanakila Canoe Club, placed second in 3:14:37.
"We train together all the time, so I'm used to Luke being in front of me," said Foster, 20. "I was just glad to get second.”
